No Figure in My Utopian World
by Bianca Gamble
In my utopian world
there would be no perfect figure.
Young women wouldn't strive
to look like one another.
Young souls wouldn't shatter
in disappointment to look
like the thin.
Beauty would only be found
from within.
Supermodels in our society would be the Mother Teresa types,
so loving, beautiful, and gifted
inside.
Too fat
Too thin
Too short
Too tall
It's all a game,
a game that we no longer
have to play.
If we lived in my utopian world
human figures would be
the last talk of the day.
Wearing a bathing suit wouldn't
be as hard as it is.
Young girls wouldn't harm
their bodies to please their peers.
If we lived in my utopian world.
There would be
no perfect figure
only perfect love.

I got this poem out of the awesome book No Body's Perfect, by Kimberly Kirberger.
Wouldn't it be nice if this utopian world Bianca speaks of could really exist? To live a life where you wouldn't have to worry about what size jeans you wear or how many calories your food has before you eat it. Well, It can exist. I'm not saying that society and our culture is going to change and body image will never be an issue. Unfortunately that won't happen but in your own personal lives this utopian world can exist. In the middle of the poem Bianca states, "It's all a game we no longer have to play." We don't have to submit ourselves to societies view of what we should look like. We don't have to change the special person we were created as to please everyone else.
It doesn't matter what you look like on the outside. That will never make you happy. It doesn't matter what others think of you because they will always find disapproval somewhere. Most of the time that disapproval isn't even justified. Strive today to focus on the inside and not the outside of yourself. Think of how many people really do love you the way you look right now.
Challenge of the week:
This week try to do something you are afraid of. Like wearing a bathing suit or shorts out in public. Eating a food you're afraid of and haven't eaten in a while. Go out in public without wearing make-up. You know what is hard for you. The best way to accept yourself and overcome your fears is to go ahead and do that which you fear. It becomes easier. Try it, but don't over do yourself
baby steps.
