Expectations
Our expectations limit what you can see, hear and do.
Let me ask you a question. In relation to your eating disorder, or whatever else you are struggling with, what do you expect? Do you expect to live with it forever? Do you expect it to always be a struggle in your life?
How many times have you been told that eating disorders are life long struggles? Well, I refuse to believe that! If you accept the lie that eating disorders are forever, that's what they'll be
.because that's what you expect. But you know what! God's the ultimate healer, He doesn't say "Oh well, she started an eating disorder, that's too bad, I can't heal her from that," yet that's what we are telling ourselves. God can heal you from anything, any situation, and any stronghold because God is our stronghold.
David wrote Psalm 18 when the Lord rescued him from his enemies and from Saul. "He is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold" (Psalm 18:2).
Physical enemies aren't attacking you, but you are being attacked by the lies of Satan and internal bondage. I'm sure many of you feel as David did when he wrote this.
- "The ropes of death surrounded me; the floods of destruction swept over me. The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death itself stared me in the face. But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears" (Psalm 18:4-6)
Cry out to God, He will hear you. He does hear you and He loves you more than "the sun and the stars that he taught how to shine. He loves you more than the high mountains and vast deserts" (Matthew West; More). You, not any thing else, were created in God's image. You are the one that God loved so much that He would send Jesus to die for you. God is capable of healing every one of your hurts, every one of your struggles. Don't expect anything less than freedom from those things.
Along with expecting something to happen don't get caught up in how it's going to happen. I'm sure many of you have heard the story of a man on top of a roof during a flood. This man was praying for God to save him and he had an unwavering faith that God was going to save him from that flood. A short while later a raft came to get him off the roof and to safety, he sent it away, saying, "God is going to save me." Then a lifeboat came along, he sent them away too. A little bit later a helicopter came but he sent the helicopter away saying, "God is going to save me." The man ended up dying, when he got to Heaven he asked God, "why didn't you save me." God said, "I sent you 2 boats and a helicopter but you didn't see me."
God sends you boats and helicopters every day. He will not let you be in any struggle or any circumstance without giving you a way to get out of it and to be strong against it. Don't be set on a helicopter because God might send a boat instead. It all depends on his plan for you and your life.
Although I don't know how God is going to free you and help you, I know he will. He loves you. Be open to all possibilities; look for God in places you wouldn't usually think to look. Don't let expectations limit you from something truly amazing.
Challenge of the week: Look at expectations you have placed in your life. Figure out if they are good or bad (restrictive) expectations. Write them down and consciously try to change those expectations throughout each day.
